Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2008 and 2009 identified a number of archaeologically significant features, the majority of which were of probable modern date and therefore potentially associated with the military camp known to have been established here during World War Two (NHER 11335). A large modern ditch and an undated ditch were exposed during trial trenching in 2008 and a number of additional modern features including ditches, pits and a possible bank were recorded during a subsequent watching brief. A large quantity of medieval finds was also recovered during the watching brief.

Map

September-November 2008. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection (Trenches 1-4).
The four trenches excavated at this location revealed two ditches, one of which was a large modern feature that had probably been associated with the military training camp established here during World War Two (NHER 11335).
An undated north-west to south-west aligned ditch exposed in the southernmost trench had probably been associated with a former field boundary (being perpendicular to the road to the south and parallel to a former boundary depicted nearby on .
Fragments of burnt flint were the only unstratified finds recovered.
It is suggested that the deep subsoil layer present at this location was the result of medieval open-field agriculture.

June 2009. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping and other groundworks associated with installation of the Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection.
A number of features were recorded, including several ditches, three pits and a shallow bank that had possibly been associated with a road. These all appeared to be modern in date and had therefore probably been associated with the military camp (NHER 11335).
A large quantity of medieval finds was apparently also recovered although the nature of these objects is unclear at present.
Final report awaited. See assessment report (S2) for further details. This work is also noted in (S3).
