Map

The site of a suspension bridge constructed by Robert Cory in 1829, although his Acle New Road was not ready until 1831. The bridge collapsed in 1845, and 78 people lost their lives. A new suspension bridge was opened in 1847 with a polygonal brick tollhouse at each end. The tolls were abolished in 1920. The bridge was disused from 1930 when the Vauxhall Bridge was used instead. Later a girder bridge was built as a replacement and then the present concrete bridge was built in 1972. The toll houses were removed in 1951 after being used as shops.
For information on the Second World War defences of the bridge see NHER 27509.
See file for a folio of old press cuttings, maps and documents relation to the bridge and tolls.
