June 1986. Building Survey.
Basic survey.
Two-storey plus attic building of rendered masonry walls dating at least from the 17th century with a 19th century cellar, alteration and small rear lean-to extension. The position and orientation of the decoration on the ceiling beams indicates that originally the building had a central stack serving one room either side. This was demolished and the building divided into two units. In the late 18th/early 19th century the building returned to being one unit and the shopfront inserted. The plan created when the building was divided into two is of considerable importance - it can be seen as the precursor of the typical 18th century double pile plan and a general interpretation of documentary evidence, along with a comparison of other Norwich buildings, suiggests that this is a single survivor of what was once a common 17th century plan type.
See report (S2) for further details and floor plans.
