Full Description
November 2008. Watching Brief.
Monitoring during works to lay an underground electricity cable.
Several sherds of Roman pottery, identified as Samian ware, were recovered from Trench 1 on the east side of the field. A possible ditch composed of a gravel patch in clay was noted in the south-west corner of the trench, although no finds were visible and it was thought that the feature was most likey to be natural. A thin layer of chalk was identified running through trench 2, which may have represented a medieval to post-medieval trackway. A deposit of shells was identified in the east end of the trench, and the shape of the deposit suggested that these shells were in a small pit. A sample was taken and the shells were identified as a mix of mussel, clam, oyster, whelk and razor. A second patch of shells was encountered 7m to the east of the first deposit. A large number of medieval pot sherds, (the majority from one pot) were recovered approximately 6-15m from the east end of the trench. A large ornate medieval key was also recovered from the spoil in this area.
