Summary

An undated possible double-ditched enclosure was visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The possible enclosure was made up of two parallel curvilinear ditches, approximately 3.5m apart, oriented roughly northeast-southwest. It is also possible that these features represent a former trackway. In 2017 that excavation of a trial trench to the east of this site exposed a ditch that was almost certainly a continuation of one of the mapped cropmarks (NHER 62537). Unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered.

Map

November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
An undated possible double-ditched enclosure was visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2758 1076. The possible enclosure was made up of two parallel curvilinear ditches, approximately 3.5m apart, oriented roughly northeast-southwest. It is also possible that these features represent a former trackway.
Since the features were only visible on one set of aerial photographs, however, the site has been recorded with a note of caution.
E. Bales (NMP), 14 November 2008.

September 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of possible development area.
This survey revealed no evidence for sub-surface remains likely to correspond with these cropmarks. It should though be noted the results of this survey were inconsistent with those of subsequent trial trenching in both this field and several other locations.
See report (S2) and NHER 62537 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 February 2018.

January 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed new road and associated infrastructure.
A trench opened immediately to the east of this location exposed a single ditch. The alignment and position of this ditch suggests it is almost certainly the continuation of a sub-surface feature associated with these cropmarks. It is notable that a second feature was not identified, particularly as the excavated ditch survived to a depth of 0.25m, suggesting that ploughing is unlikely to have removed an adjacent ditch (assuming it would have been of similar size). Unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered.
See report (S3) and NHER 62537 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 February 2018.
