Full Description
November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Two undated linear ditch features of possible medieval to post medieval date are visible at TG 2937 1351 as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1). The longest visible feature runs northwest-southeast for approximately 190m, and is on a similar alignment to, and therefore may be related to the settlement described in NHER 50729. The feature is evident running almost at right-angles to what is now a field boundary but may once have been (at least in part) a road or trackway named Ravensgate Way, depicted on a map of 1585 (NHER 8127); map reproduced schematically in (S2)).
The second feature appears to be cut by the first, and therefore may relate to earlier activity on the site. It is less clear, and more difficult to characterize. It seems possible that these features represent field boundaries or land division, and a late medieval or early post medieval date seems most likely, with the site occupying a former common-edge position in relation to Mousehold Heath. The linear feature approximately 300m to the south west (NHER 51925) may also have represented a field boundary.
