Summary

Two undated linear ditch features and possibly related curvilinear features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. It is likely that they represent medieval to post medieval field boundaries, although their proximity to Bronze Age ring ditches (NHER 45115 and 45116) may indicate an earlier origin for the site.

Map

November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Two undated linear ditch features and possibly related curvilinear features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2997 1356. The site is principally made up of two parallel ditches, approximately 83m in length and 60m apart, which may represent some form of trackway. The ditches do not quite align with field divisions visible on the Ordnance Survey (S2), but it seems likely that they may relate to medieval or post medieval land division.

However, the presence of faint curvilinear ditches, which appear to be overlain by the pair of parallel ditches described above, would suggest more than one phase of activity on the site, and it should be noted that two Bronze Age ring ditches (NHER 45115 and 45116) have been recorded at approximately 400m and 600m to the southeast. There is a possibility, then, that these features relate to much earlier land division or management. Unfortunately, they were only visible on one set of aerial photographs, and are therefore difficult to characterise with more confidence.
E. Bales (NMP), 17 November 2008.
