Summary

The cropmarks of two possible Bronze Age ring ditches are visible on aerial photographs of this area taken in 1946. They are sub-circular to sub-oval in plan and might suggest that round barrows once stood here.

Map

November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of two possible Bronze Age ring ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1). The cropmarks are centred at TG 2981 1264 and TG 2985 1258. The ring ditches are sub-circular to sub-oval in plan with a 2m wide ditch and a maximum external diameter of approximately 23m. They appear to have been truncated by field boundaries visible on the First edition Ordnance Survey map (S2), although it is difficult to be certain whether they were ever complete circles, especially the southern-most ditch.

It is possible that the ditches are of Bronze Age date and could relate to round barrows. They are situated on a gentle northeast-facing slope at 30m OD. Other possible ring ditch cropmarks are located at approximately 425m to the southwest (NHER 51929), and at 800m and 1160m to the northeast (NHER 45115 and 45116 respectively).
