Summary

Undated linear and curvilinear features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Their orientation is generally at odds with that of the modern field pattern, although seems to echo the medieval to post medieval site to the east (NHER 51947) in places, as well as the possible Iron Age to Roman trackway to the north (NHER 51930) in others, suggesting a multi-phase site.

Map

November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Fragmentary cropmarks of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1) centred at TG 2924 1204. They may represent the remnants of a multi-period field system of possible Iron Age to Roman or medieval to post medieval date. The longest of these ditches measures approximately 180m in length and runs roughly east-west, on a similar alignment to a possible trackway identified 260m to the north, which was tentatively assigned a possible Iron to Roman date (NHER 51930).

The other features in the vicinity are also fragmentary and difficult to characterise. There is a possible enclosure centred at TG 2931 1217, measuring approximately 35 by 25m. There are also two possible pairs of parallel ditches, which may relate to trackways, although these were less convincing. Their orientation had more in common with the medieval to post medieval enclosed site 100m to the south-east (NHER 51947), and as such they may be dated to this period. It certainly seems likely that the features described above represent more than one phase on the site, but as they do not intersect one another it is difficult to be certain of this.
