Summary

Two probable enclosures in the form of curving sub-rectangular ditches were visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, within the possible medieval to post medieval 'entrenchment’ (NHER 51933). As these features seem to echo the medieval to post medieval settlement to the north (NHER 50729), they have also been dated to the medieval to post medieval period.

Map

November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Two probable enclosures in the form of curving sub-rectangular ditches were visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2861 1199, within the possible medieval to post medieval ‘entrenchment’ (NHER 51933). As these features seem to echo the medieval to post medieval settlement to the north (NHER 50729), they have also been dated to the medieval to post-medieval period.
The enclosures are oriented roughly east-west, the largest of the two measuring approximately 35m by 50m, and although there appear to be breaks in the ditches, this may simply be due to masking of the archaeology. The smaller of the two enclosures appears to contain a pair of north-south ditches, running parallel to its eastern side, towards a possible entrance, although the features were fragmentary and it is difficult to be certain of their function.

October 2019. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site to east of Norwich Northern Distributer Road.
A number of fragmentary north-to-south and east-to-west aligned linear anomalies identified at this location are likely to represent surviving remains associated with these cropmarks.
See report (S3) and NHER 63454 for further details.
