Summary

An undated possible double-ditched enclosure and possible pit were visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Their blurred edges suggest that these features may in fact be geological, an interpretation which is also supported by the negative results of a geophysical survey and subsequent trial trenching undertaken in 2019.

Map

November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
An undated possible double-ditched enclosure was visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2859 1225. This consists of two possible semi-circular ditches, up to 11m in width, and a possible pit, approximately 7m in diameter, to the southwest.

The features were rather broad and blurred, and difficult to define, and may represent geological features rather than archaeology, so have been recorded with a note of caution as they are only visible on one set of photographs.
E. Bales (NMP), November 2008.

January 2019. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey suggests that these cropmarks were indeed probably of natural origin, their position, form and orientation being similar to a series of broad anomalies thought to represent variations in the underlying geology.
See report (S2) and NHER 63455 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 June 2019.

April 2019. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The trenches that coincided with these cropmarks revealed no evidence for associated surface remains.
See report (S3) and NHER 63455 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 1 April 2021.
