Full Description
November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A curving linear ditch feature is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2826 1223. It is fragmentary in nature, and difficult to define, but appears to be on a similar alignment to the ditched enclosures visible 750m to the north (NHER 50730), and may possibly represent a medieval to post medieval enclosure.
This interpretation is far from certain, however, and the feature is so fragmentary that it is possible that it represents geological features.
E. Bales (NMP), 18 November 2008.
March-June 2009. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site R7).
Although the area examined coindiced with the northernmost part of this cropmark no corresponding anomalies were identfied.
It should however be noted that subsequent work at this location suggests the results of this survey were not particularly reliable.
See report (S2) and NHER 63456 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 June 2019.
April-August 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field R7).
This work saw two trenches excavated at this location, revealing a substantial feature that appeared to correspond with the main north-west to south-east aligned cropmark. It does however appear that this was probably not an enclosure ditch as there was no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with the short south-west to north-east element of the mapped cropmark. The date of the excavated feature is also uncertain. A medieval pottery sherd was the only find recovered from its primary fill but its upper fills contained a number of post-medieval and post-medieval/modern objects, suggesting that at the very least it had still been partially open during these later periods.
See report (S3) and NHER 63456 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 June 2019.
