Map

November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A possible rectangular enclosure, of unknown but possibly Iron Age to Roman date, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2956 1088. It forms part of an area of multi-period cropmarks (NHER 51944), some of which appear to overlie this feature.

The enclosure is sub-rectangular in plan. It measures up to 72m long and 56m wide, and has one relatively clear entrance located west of centre on its northern side, at TG 2955 1092. The other apparent breaks in the ditch are caused by masking of the archaeology due to underlying geology.

It is difficult to date this feature securely, but it certainly seems to be earlier than the surrounding archaeology (NHER 51944), and is similar in character to an enclosure dated to the Iron Age to Roman period (NHER 45122), 665m to the northeast. However, the possibility that it is related to the medieval to post medieval farmstead in the vicinity cannot be ruled out.
E. Bales (NMP), 18 November 2008.
