Map

August 2008. Field visit.
Various masonry remains were visible in garden, including part buried sections of flint wall and a flint, brick and mortar structure measuring about 3.5m long by 2.2m high. The structure includes the remnants of a chimney, a possible stone fireplace lintel and a brick floor. [1] suggests it may have been a forge.

House may include 18th century elements. Its northern wall includes a number of different builds. The western 6.6m of the wall is flint with brick quoins. The section between 6.6m and 9.35m from the front wall is built of brick with remnants of black paint. The eastern 3m has three different sections. The lowest section (0.85m tall) is all flint, the middle section (0.5m high) is flint with brick quoins and the upper section is brick with remnants of black paint.
It is possible the flint wall in the garden and the lower section of the eastern part of the northern wall were once part of the same structure. The middle section may represent rebuilding of this structure. The upper section probably dates to the same period as the section between 6.6m and 9.35m; both probably represent the extension of the house. It seems likely the flint structure had been demolished by the time (S1) was produced. The extension does not appear to be on (S1) and therefore most probably post dates the 1880s.
Two 18th century architectural fragments were found during building work in the extension. See notes in file.
