Summary

An evaluation at this site in 2009 revealed no trace of the southern arm of the town ditch. Instead, it revealed several post-medieval features including a pit and post-holes, as well as an undated ditch which has been interpreted as a boundary within the marshy area to the south of the medieval town.

Map

May 2009. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed development site. Contexts 1-25.
No evidence of the southern town ditch was found in this location, which indicates that it almost certainly ran to the north. A recut ditch running ESE-WNW contained no dating evidence but was probably a medieval boundary that subdivided the marshland that lay to the south of the town ditch. Several post-holes and other features were also identified although these appeared to be footings associated with more recent, post-medieval structures.
See report (S1) for further details, including projected line of the town ditch, based on previous excavations.
The results of this work are also summarised in (S2). See also (S3).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.27).
