Full Description
March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible curvilinear enclosure of late prehistoric date may be visible on aerial photographs to the west of the recreation ground, Thorpe St Andrew (S1). The site is centred on TG 2681 0920.
This site consists of a curvilinear ditch with an irregular plan, ranging from 0.9-2.4m wide. Although incomplete it is possible that this ditch forms part of a curvilinear enclosure, up to 56m across, however no sign of the remainder of the postulated ditch circuit can be seen on the aerial photographs. A short section (approximately 22m) of a second ditch, possibly parallel to the first, was also visible, as well as two further, ditches on a different (north west-south east) alignment, which may or may not be related to the possible enclosure.
It is possible that this is of late prehistoric date, as several prehistoric find spots have been recorded in the vicinity. A prehistoric flint flake, an undated circular hearth and charcoal scatter as well as prehistoric pot boilers, Late Bronze Age pottery sherds and saddle quern fragments have been recovered, all from within 115m of the enclosure.
