Summary

Cropmarks of several undated linear features were visible on aerial photographs to the east of a quarry pit in Thorpe St Andrew. They may relate to medieval and/or post medieval land division, or even a possible trackway, and may also be related to a possible Roman enclosure approximately 200m to the west (NHER 21174).

Map

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of several undated fragmentary linear features were visible on one set of aerial photographs (S1) to the east of a quarry pit in Thorpe St Andrew. The features were centred on TG 2616 0888.
They consist of two pairs of parallel ditches, one pair running roughly east-west for 48m, approximately 9m apart, the second pair running roughly north-south for approximately 87m, up to 14m apart. These ditches were only visible on one set of photographs, and had been removed by quarrying by 1964 (S2). It is possible that they relate to medieval or post medieval land division, although it is also possible that they were related to the possible Roman features approximately 200m to the west (NHER 21174). Finds of Roman and post medieval pottery have been made in the vicinity (NHER 9684).
