Eight underground WWII air-raid shelters are visible in the Hillside Avenue school playground, on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred on TG 2696 0875.
The underground shelters consist of an L-shaped arrangement of eight mounds of earth, each measuring between 10m and 16m in length by 5m in width, each with a curved trench containing steps leading down into the structure, with concrete reinforcement visible at the mouth of the entrance. Each shelter had a square concrete vent measuring 1.2m x 1.2m at the opposite end to the entrance. They were presumably built primarily for the use of pupils and teachers at the school, but may also have been used by members of the public, such as local residents. There were several above ground shelters visible in the area, sited approximately 660m to the northwest. The shelters were filled in by 1947 (S4).
