Summary

A cropmark of a possible D-shaped enclosure was visible on aerial photographs, which appears to be overlain by later field drainage ditches (NHER 52017). The feature may represent a late prehistoric enclosure, or Late Saxon to Medieval moated site, suggested by multi-period findspots in the vicinity.

Map

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A cropmark of a D-shaped enclosure is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 2954 0732, which appears to be overlain by later field drainage ditches (NHER 52017).
The possible enclosure is D-shaped, or sub-hexagonal, and measures 34m x 34m internally. Its defining ditch measures between 1.4m and 4m in width, and appears to be continuous, with no visible causeway or entrance. It is likely to be earlier than the westnorthwest-eastsoutheast parallel drainage ditches that appear to overlay it, but it is difficult to date this feature securely, as there are a number of multi-period findspots in the vicinity (NHER 25984, 25698 and 42692), and it is possible that this feature may date to the late prehistoric to Roman period, or possibly even to the late Saxon to Medieval period. The widening of the ditch at TG 2953 0730 may represent a possible fishpond within a moat, although the dimensions of the ditch may be too narrow to represent a medieval moat feature (Rogerson, A. pers. comm.).
It should be noted, however, that the feature is only visible on photographs from one year (S1)-(S2), and therefore should be viewed with a note of caution.
