Full Description
April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A large, sub-circular pit is visible as an earthwork (S1), and subsequently as a cropmark (S2)-(S3) on aerial photographs in a field to the southwest of Bramerton Common, at TG 2915 0584.
The pit itself measures approximately 7m in diameter, with a ‘halo’ of upcast spoil or bank around it, approximately 5m in width. It is thought that this feature may represent a World War Two bomb crater, as it is visible as an earthwork in the aftermath of World War Two (S1). However, this may not be the case, and it may relate to localised gravel extraction or agricultural activity, a theory proven by a pit of similar size and shape 600m to the southwest, at TG 2878 0536, which was visible as a cropmark in a similar way (S3), but was not visible on the immediate post war photographs, and has therefore been discounted as a modern agricultural or extraction feature.
E. Bales (NMP), 7 April 2009.
