Summary

An undated bank and square ditched enclosure are visible on aerial photographs, in the area to the north of the ruined church of St Mary, Kirby Bedon (NHER 4551). The bank appears to be a continuation of field boundaries visible on 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps, and the square feature may have been a moat, or structure within this medieval to post medieval boundary.

Map

April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
An undated bank visible as a cropmark stretching from TG 2971 0553 to TG 2785 0566 on aerial photographs (S1)- (S2).This feature, 60m in length and up to 6m wide, runs diagonally north east-south west, and appears to be a continuation of a field boundary marked on the Ordance Survey 2nd edition map (S4), suggesting that it dates to the medieval to post medieval period.

It may have formed a property boundary, and as such may be related to the sub square enclosure or possible boundary ditch, measuring 15m by 14.6m internally, centred on TG 2794 0548, 50m to the south east. This feature may represent a possible moat feature, with a ditch up to 1.9m in width, and its proximity to the pond to the south, which is marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map (S3), may suggest a medieval to post medieval date for the feature.
E. Bales (NMP), 7 April 2009.
