Summary

Cropmarks of a possible medieval to post medieval windmill mound and a linear feature to the west, as well a small curvilinear feature, which may be geological, are visible on aerial photographs, to the north of Park Farm, Bixley. The extremely dark and well-defined cropmark of the possible windmill ditch circuit, which displays a distinct break it its outline, and a cruciform shape in the centre, is reminiscent of other windmill sites identified in Norfolk and elsewhere.

Map

April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of a possible post medieval windmill mound and a linear feature to the west, as well a small curvilinear feature, which may be geological, are visible on aerial photographs (S1), to the north of Park Farm, Bixley.

The circular ditch of a windmill mound, c. 11m in internal diameter, with its distinctive cruciform mark in the centre, was visible at TG 2599 0543. There is a 3m break in the ditch, presumably representing an entrance, on the south-eastern side. It is quite likely that this represents a post medieval windmill site. The dark and well-defined cropmark of the ditch circuit is reminiscent of other windmill sites identified in Norfolk and elsewhere.

Just over 2m to the west, a linear ditch feature was visible, running for 26m northeast-southwest, from TG 2599 0544 to TG 2598 0541. Almost 7m to the east of the windmill site, a small curvilinear feaure, 3m in diameter, was visible, with a small (0.7m in diameter) possible pit in the centre, at TG 2601 0543. These two features are slightly ephemeral and difficult to be certain of, however, and, as they are only visible on one set of photographs they have been recorded with caution, as they may represent features of the underlying geology, or be the result of recent agricultural activity.
E. Bales (NMP), 7 April 2009.
