Summary

Cropmarks of a possible Iron Age to Roman trapezoidal enclosure are visible on aerial photographs. The enclosure is similar in alignment to a series of Iron Age to Roman ditch features identified 270m to the southwest (NHER 51973), and in morphology to rectilinear enclosures identified elsewhere in Norfolk (NHER 13004, 13101, 18388 and 38603). This feature appears to be overlain by linear features of possible medieval to post medieval date (NHER 52112). A geophysical survey undertaken in 2015 identified no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with these cropmarks. It was though noted that ground conditions may have hindered the recognition of archaeologically-significant deposits.

Map

May 2009. Norfolk NMP.
An incomplete trapezoidal enclosure may be visible, although only on Google Earth aerial images of the site (S1), centred on TG 2901 0947. The enclosure measures 98m in width and the south-western section may be double-ditched, and this appears to be the earliest feature in the area, as it is overlain by linear features running northeast-southwest and a pair of parallel ditches, or possible trackway, running roughly north south (NHER 52112). The enclosure is similar in alignment to a series of Iron Age to Roman ditch features identified 270m to the southwest (NHER 51973), and appears to be similar in morphology to rectilinear enclosures dated to the Iron Age to Roman period during the NMP Coastal Zone mapping (NHER 13004, 13101, 18388 and 38603).

May 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land south of Smee Lane and west of proposed route of Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
This survey identified no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with these cropmarks. It is though noted that ground conditions (particularly a low magnetic susceptibility) may have hindered the recognition of archaeological deposits.
See report (S2) and NHER 62623 for further details.
