Map

May 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of possible field boundary ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), some of which correspond to field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map of 1849, and have therefore been assigned a medieval to post medieval date. The site is centred on TG 2939 0941.
The majority of the features, such as the ditches running from TG 2946 0981 to TG 2917 0986, and TG 2943 0940 to TG2976 0936, correspond almost exactly to ditches depicted on the Tithe Map, although a possible bank feature running from TG 2978 0936 to TG2984 0926, visible as negative cropmarks (S3), is aligned approximately 14 degrees further north than that on the Tithe map, suggesting a more northwest-southeast alignment for the feature. It is also possible that this bank or boundary exhibits at least one possible internal division, on a west southwest-east northeast alignment from TG 2981 0932 to TG 2977 0930.
Many of the ditch features are fragmentary and difficult to characterise, particularly in the northern half of the site, although it is possible that even the ditches which do not appear directly on the Tithe map may be related to the boundaries depicted on it, such as that running from TG 2908 0985 to TG 2917 0986, which appears to link two boundaries. It therefore seems reasonable to include these fragmentary features in the medieval to post medieval date.

May 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land south of Smee Lane and west of proposed route of Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
This survey identified no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the fragmentary, westernmost cropmarks in this group. It is though noted that ground conditions (particularly a low magnetic susceptibility) may have hindered the recognition of archaeological deposits.
See report (S7) and NHER 62623 for further details.
