April 1978. Building Survey.
Examined as part of Norwich Survey.
The site belonged to the Grey Friars in the Middle Ages; the ancient wall immediately north of the Club premises marks the boundary between the friars and the cathedral monastey. The building itself dates to the mid 18th century. Prior to 1887 it was known as Old Bank House, a reference to when this was the residence of James Hudson, a banker, who business was carried out here until 1866. The Club acquired the house and its grounds in 1887 and extensive alterations and additions were carried out over the next two years to the designs of Edward Boardman. Inside the house much 18th-century detail survives, although there has been a good deal of rearrangement and possibly some reproduction work.
See record form (S2) for further details and photographs. See also file for copies of various floor plans and elevations (from A. Carter archive).
