Summary

A series of linear bank features surrounding two possible pits were visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, which appear to cut a possible section of the Roman road reported to run from Brampton to Thorpe St Andrew (NHER 52126). In 2009 a trial trenching evaluation identified a number of pits in this area, although no dating evidence was recovered.

Map

June 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A series of linear bank features surrounding two possible pits were visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S3), which appear to cut a possible section of the Roman road reported to run from Brampton to Thorpe St Andrew (NHER 52126). The site is centred on TG 2419 1447.
Two elongated oval pits are visible, measuring up to 75m by 22m, one of which is aligned east northeast-west south west, the other is aligned north northeast-south south west, and these pits are surrounded by a partially complete triangular-shaped bank, measuring up to 14m in width.
It is possible that these features relate to medieval or post medieval extraction, perhaps related to agricultural activity in the area.
E. Bales (NMP), 25 June 2009.

December 2009. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Route (Site S6).
The trenches excavated in the vicinity of these cropmarks revealed a number of potentially associated pits. No dating evidence was recovered.
See report (S4) and NHER 61113 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 July 2015. Amended 14 July 2019.
