Summary

Archaeological investigations here in 2007 revealed 22 pits of various sizes. Dating evidence was only recovered from a few pits and included 18th-19th century ceramic building material and 19th-20th century ceramics. One large pit contained reddish sand which may have been the product of high temperatures created in a brick kiln.

July 2006. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed route of Witton to North Walsham Anglian Water pipeline.
The suggested route passes through an area that may be considered to be archaeologically sensitive. The rich farmland has been subject to occupation and settlement certainly from the Neolithic and a large number of prehistoric and later features are known in the area.
See report (S1) for further details.

January-February 2007. Strip Map and Sample Excavation and Watching Brief.
Fieldwork along route of pipeline (Area F):
his area produced 22 pits of various sizes. Nearer to the road, at the north-west of the site the pits were generally larger. Dating evidence was only recovered from a few pits and included 18th-19th century ceramic building material and 19th-20th century ceramics. Of most interest was a large pit measuring 16m by 2.5m which contained reddish sand and post-medieval ceramic building material. The reddish sand may have been the result of the high temperatures created in a brick kiln. See NHER 15877 for details of a brick kiln nearby.
See final report (S1) and assessment report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.115).
