Summary

In 2009 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. Finds recovered included several possible prehistoric worked flints; medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval/modern pottery sherds and various other, undatable and late post-medieval to modern objects. The small pottery assemblage consists primarily of early medieval ware, with little evidence for significant activity after the 1400s.

June 2009. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology (ACL/09/3).
This test pit was located at [1] and excavated to natural geological deposits, which were encountered at a depth of 0.6m. Finds recovered include:
10 medieval pottery sherds (predominantly early medieval ware).
1 late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherd.
1 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherd.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 8 possible prehistoric worked flints, 33 unidentified ceramic building material fragments, 4 iron nails and 3 iron 'lumps'.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2). See also local press article (S3).
