Summary

In 2009 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. Apart from a single late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherd the datable finds recovered were exclusively post-medieval to modern, including a large amount of 'Victorian' pottery. This suggests the site was open fields until the construction of the nearby roadside properties in the 17th century. The presence of several potentially worked flints and fragments of burnt stone in the test pit's lower contexts does though hint at possible prehistoric activity in the vicinity.

Map

June 2009. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/09/6) was located at [1] and excavated to natural geological deposits, which were encountered at a depth of 0.8m.
Finds recovered include:
1 late medieval/early post-medieval pottery sherd.
11 post-medieval pottery sherds and 9 clay tobacco pipe fragments.
197 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 5 possible prehistoric worked flints, 13 burnt stones, 65 unidentified ceramic building material fragments, 1 brick fragment, 6 curved roof tile fragments, 4 flat tile fragments, 2 slate fragments, various pieces of vessel, bottle and window glass, a belt buckle, a button, 3 pieces of metal wire, 4 iron nails, 6 pieces of scrap iron, a possible slag fragment and 4 oyster shells.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2). See also local press article (S3).
