Summary

In 2009 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. Although this test pit was located close to the historic core of the town there was no evidence for medieval or earlier activity. The small amount of post-medieval pottery recovered is of 16th-century date and consists primarily of beer mugs – suggesting the possible presence of a inn nearby. Slag was also recovered from the lower portion of the test pit, potentially indicating industrial activity in the vicinity of the site. The bulk of the pottery recovered is though of late post-medieval/modern date and it is likely the majority of the other finds recovered were of a similarly recent age.

Map

June 2009. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/09/7) was located at [1] and excavated to natural geological deposits, which were encountered at a depth of 0.9m.
Finds recovered include:
4 post-medieval pottery sherds.
55 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
It is noted that the post-medieval pottery dates to the 16th century and consists primarily of beer mugs – suggesting the possible presence of a nearby inn at this time.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 13 brick fragments, 2 curved tile fragments, 1 flat tile fragment, 73 unidentified ceramic building material fragments, pieces of bottle, vessel and window glass, 6 iron nails, a metal bolt, a metal button/token, a piece of scrap iron, 3 iron 'lumps', 17 pieces of iron slag and 2 fragments of animal bone.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2). See also local press article (S3).
