Summary

In 2009 an archaeological test pit was excavated at this location with the help of local school children. This revealed little evidence for significant activity at this location prior to the late post-medieval period, with earlier finds being largely limited to a small number of medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds and fragments of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe. The bulk of the pottery recovered is of late post-medieval/modern date and it is likely that the majority of the other finds are of a similarly recent date. Possible exceptions include a small number of potentially worked flints that may represent evidence for prehistoric activity.

June 2009. Test Pit.
Excavation of single test pit by local school children as part of the Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) programme run by Access Cambridge Archaeology.
This test pit (ACL/09/9) was located at [1] and excavated to natural geological deposits, which were encountered at a depth of 0.9m.
Finds recovered include:
1 medieval pottery sherd.
5 post-medieval pottery sherds and 3 clay tobacco pipe stem fragments.
33 late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds.
This test pit also produced a range of other finds that were not subject to specialist examination, the majority of which are either of probable late post-medieval to modern date or inherently undatable. These additional objects include 4 possible prehistoric worked flints, 3 burnt stones, 4 tile fragments, 31 unidentified ceramic building material fragments, 1 stone ?tile fragment, 5 slate fragments, pieces of bottle, vessel and window glass, 1 iron nail, 2 pieces of scrap iron, 1 piece of iron slag, 3 oyster shells, 1 cockle shell and 1 animal bone fragment.
For further details, including a wider discussion of the results of the HEFA test pitting surveys undertaken in Acle between 2009 and 2014 see report (S1), which incorporates information from pottery report (S2). See also local press article (S3).
