Full Description
The Norwich Castle Museum holds a large collection of prehistoric flint implements that were found by [1] in the South Acre/Castle Acre area during the 1950s on land farmed by [2]. These finds were donated in several batches by [3], the daughter of [1] between 2008 and 2011.
The find batch finds included the following 13 objects (NWHCM : 2009.265.1-13):
1 Early Neolithic flint tranchet axe preform.
1 Neolithic polished flint axehead, 3 fragmentary polished axes, 1 polished flint axe/adze and 1 axe roughout.
1 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint sickle blade (S1), 1 flint dagger/knife fragment, 1 discoidal flint knife and 1 unfinished discoidal knife.
1 undatable prehistoric pointed waste flake.
1 large fossil belemnite.
Identified by P. Robins (NCM), see descriptions and copies of photographs in file.
The second batch of finds included an additional 53 objects (NWHCM : 2009.265.14-66). A list of these finds has not been received from the NCM. Finds noted in the museums records that must be from this second batch of objects include:
1 Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe (NWHCM : 2009.265.27). Possibly from one of the gravel pits in South Acre, which are known to have produced many such objects.
1 Roman quern fragment (NWHCM : 2009.265.66).
Various prehistoric worked flints including at least one additional sickle, scrapers, rods, possible projectile fragments and flakes.
It appears that the NCM subsequently received a third batch of finds from this collection, which were accessioned in 2010 (NWHCM : 2010.21). No information on these finds has been received. The collection is listed in the museum's records as comprising predominantly Neolithic to Early Bronze Age flint implements, including "a sickle, axes (including roughouts), knives, flakes, scrapers, adzes, rods and possible projectiles".
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 28 August 2014.
