Summary

A war memorial constructed of Cornish grey granite with inscribed bronze plaques was unveiled in Dereham Market Place in 1922. This memorial is thought to have been inspired by Sir Edwin Lutyens's cenotaph in Whitehall. It was originally dedicated to the men of Dereham who died in the First World War and was subsequently also dedicated to the dead of the Second World War. This is also the site of the Dereham Obelisk, a mid 18th century distance marker, which was dismantled in World War Two and thrown down a nearby well.
