Summary

A series of undated linear ditches are visible as positive cropmarks on aerial photographs. These features may be related to the possible medieval to post medieval drainage ditches visible approximately 150m to the south east (NHER 52338), either performing a drainage or land division function. It is also possible that they are prehistoric in date, as a Neolithic flint axe was found in the vicinity.

Map

October 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A series of undated linear ditches are visible as positive cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 1610 2014.
The majority of these features seem to be aligned north northwest-south southeast, apart from one running north east-south west from TG 1604 2019 to TG 1593 2014, and the corners of two possible enclosures centred at TG 1610 2023, the north-eastern one of which appears to overlie the south-western one and may represent a second phase of the same site.
These features may be related to the possible drainage ditches visible approximately 150m to the south east (NHER 52338), as they are on a similar alignment, and at least one ditch, running north northeast-south southwest from TG 1605 2012 to TG 1603 2004 appears to line up with a surviving drainage ditch to the south. They may also relate to medieval or post medieval land division. The ditch that lines up with the modern drain, however, appears to overlie an earlier feature on the north northwest-south southeast alignment, and it is possible that these features are evidence of a multi-period site.
Part of a Neolithic polished flint axe was found in the vicinity (NHER 7504), and it is possible that at least some of these features may be prehistoric in date. Roman pottery (NHER 7507) and a range of multi-period metalwork (NHER 44066) was also recovered nearby.
E. Bales (NMP), October 2009.
