Summary

A large curvilinear ditch and several undated linear ditches were visible as positive cropmarks on aerial photographs. These features may relate to medieval to post medieval land division or drainage, but as they were only visible on one photographic frame it is difficult to be certain of their nature. It is also possible that some or all of these features relate to an earlier phase of activity on the site, perhaps late prehistoric in date.

Map

October 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A large curvilinear ditch, and several undated linear ditches were visible as positive cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 1586 1985. These features may relate to medieval to post medieval land division or drainage, but as they were only visible on one photographic frame it is difficult to be certain of their nature.
The features include a curvilinear ditch, measuring approximately 150m in length, which appears to be cut by a modern drain, as does a north-south linear feature running from TG 1581 1984 to TG 1580 1974. It is possible that these features were part of a series of medieval to post medieval field drains, recorded 330m to the east as NHER 52338. An east west feature, running from TG 1586 1996 to TG 1581 1996 may represent a former field boundary, as it runs perpendicular to a clear north-south ditch which is visible as a field boundary on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map (S2), and has therefore not been mapped.
It is also possible that some or all of these features relate to an earlier phase of activity on the site, perhaps late prehistoric in date, and that the curvilinear feature is part of a large enclosure ditch.
