Full Description
October 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), although these appear to be mainly drainage ditches. Many linear features and several possible enclosures (including NHER 52341 and NHER 52342) are also visible as cropmarks on (S3), and they appear to represent several phases of activity on the site.
The linear features are in the main orientated north northwest-south southeast, with possible continuations of enclosure ditch perpendicular to this. The main component of an enclosure centred at TG 1625 1946 appears to measure approximately 80m x 60m. This appears to be cut through by a ditch on an east northeast-west southwest alignment, which is parallel to a field division shown on the Tithe Map of 1900 (S4). A possible continuation of this field boundary ditch is visible 110m to the north east from TG 1648 1956 to TG 1642 1954.
The ditch which appears to form the eastern limit of the enclosure described above, on a north northwest-south southeast alignment, appears to cut through a possible Iron Age-Roman enclosure to the north (NHER 52342), at TG 1627 1952.
A possible earlier feature is represented by a faint linear ditch stretching from TG 1624 1944 to TG 1632 1939 on a northwest-southeast alignment. This alignment appears to be paralleled by fragments of possible double-ditched trackway approximately 340m to the southwest (NHER 52343).
It is therefore possible that there are three phases of activity on the site, potentially dating from the late prehistoric period to the Roman, medieval and/or post medieval period.
E. Bales (NMP), October 2009.
