Full Description
October 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A possible rectangular enclosure is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 1728 1918. The enclosure is defined by a 1.8m wide ditch, enclosing an area of approximately 22m by 18m. Its external dimensions are a maximum of 29 by 21m.
The feature does not appear to be continuous, rather it appears to exhibit possible breaks, one on the western side measuring 5.8m, and another possible break on the eastern side measuring approximately 6m, although it is difficult to be certain due to blurring of the features by the underlying geology.
Given the morphology of the enclosure, as well as its proximity to a possible section of Roman road or trackway 60m to the west (NHER 52360), it seems likely that it is Roman in date, although it is possible that it had Iron Age origins.
The cropmark itself, however, is not particularly clear, and may in fact be a product of the underlying geology. Coupled with the fact that this site is only visible on set of photographs, it means that the site has been recorded with a note of caution.
E. Bales (NMP), October 2009.
