Summary

A possible D-shaped enclosure and linear ditches with which it may be associated are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. These linear features are aligned in a similar way to the possible Roman features 460m to the west (NHER 52360), and may therefore date to the Roman period. However, they are also perpendicular to the divisions depicted on the Tithe Map of 1840, and may be medieval to post medieval in date.

Map

October 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A possible D-shaped enclosure and linear ditches with which it may be associated are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred on TG 1765 1902.
All the features are rather faint and ephemeral, and show best on only one set of photographs (S3), but it is possible to determine a rectilinear or D-shaped enclosure centred on TG 1769 1911, surrounding a hollow or pit. It is possible that the enclosure relates to a fence line surrounding this landscape feature. The possible enclosure measures approximately 65m by 35m, and appears to have a fragmentary curvilinear ditch at its southern end. There is no visible northern side, although it is possible that this has been truncated by a modern field boundary.
The possible enclosure is aligned north northeast-south southwest, in the same way is the possibly associated linear features, the longest of which measures up to 323m and runs from TG 1764 1901 to TG 1759 1882.
These linear features are aligned in a similar way to the possible Roman features 460m to the west (NHER 52360), and may therefore date to the Roman period. However, they are also perpendicular to the divisions depicted on the Tithe Map of 1840 (S4), and may be medieval to post medieval in date.
