Full Description
February 2008. Air Photo Interpretation.
Cropmarks that likely to represent a double-ditched trackway of possible Iron Age to Roman date recorded at this location.
See report (S1) for further details.
A. Cattermole (NLA), 12 January 2010.
October 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A possible linear trackway is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S2)-(S4), running northwest-southeast for over 1km from TG 1580 1625 to TG1661 1565 on land either side of Fir Covert Road, Taverham.
The trackway consists of two, roughly parallel ditches, between 4.5m and 14m apart.
A possible junction is visible in the trackway at TG 1623 159, suggesting that it does indeed form part of a field system.
Prehistoric lithic implements and large quantities of burnt flint have been recovered from the field (NHER 50495) 430m to the south, which may suggest that this feature represents a prehistoric trackway, however it shares an alignment with a similar trackway or multi-ditched boundary recorded approximately 650m to the north (NHER 52377), which was assigned an Iron Age to Roman date, and may form part of a reasonably extensive field system together with other perpendicular linear features (NHER 52376, 52379, 52382 and 52384), such as that recorded in the Broadland area of Norfolk (NHER 6096). However, it should also be noted that the possible trackway runs parallel to the Felthorpe/Taverham parish boundary, approximately 300m to the north-east, and may therefore be medieval to post medieval in origin.
The feature appears to be cut by a later ditch feature at TG 1618 1599 which has been recorded as part of NHER 52379 and may date to the Roman, or medieval to post medieval period.
E. Bales (NMP), October 2009.
April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Block 8).
This survey identified a north-west to south-east aligned probable ditch at TG 1648 1574 that would appear to continue the line of this probable trackway.
See report (S5) and NHER 50496 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 May 2019.
