NHER 52386 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Cropmarks of undated fragmentary linear and possible enclosure and pit features

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Several fragmentary linear ditches and pits and one or more possible enclosures are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), on land to the east of Fir Covert Road, Taverham, centred on TG 1597 1533.
It is possible that the corner of an enclosure ditch is visible, with a fragmentary linear ditch stretching from TG 1604 1537 to a possible curved corner at TG 1595 1537.
A second possible enclosure may be visible to the south, centred on TG 1596 1525, but again the cropmarks are so fragmentary it is difficult to be certain.
The majority of the field is covered with pit-like features, which are largely geological in nature, but some of the larger and more prominent features have been mapped, such as those centred on TG 1591 1528 and TG 1603 1531.
These features are only really visible on one photographic frame, and therefore not in stereo, and it was felt that they are likely to represent underlying geological features, but they have been recorded anyway with a note of caution. Fieldwalking to the north of here recovered worked flints of Bronze Age or Iron Age date (NHER 33482), a Middle Saxon to Late Saxon hinge-plate was recovered to the north west (NHER 31163), and a fragment of a Roman bracelet was found approximately 250m to the south (NHER 31101), so it is not possible to suggest any clear date for these possible features.

Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development site.
Although all of the cropmarks in this group fell within the area examined the majority had no potentially corresponding anomalies. The one exception was the 'L'-shaped feature at TG 1596 1537.

July-September 2025. Trial Trenching.
One of the trenches excavated at this location uncovered a roughly east-to-west aligned ditch associated with the 'L'-shaped cropmark at TG 1596 1537, although unfortunately this feature produced no dating evidence. The majority of the other cropmarks in this group did not coincide with the excavated trenches.
