Full Description
October 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A possible ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred on TG 1969 1861. The internal diameter of the ring ditch is 24m, and width of the ditch itself varies from 0.9 to 1.2m.
It may be possible to determine a second, concentric outer ditch, sited 7.5m to the south east of the inner ditch, but both these features are fragmentary and ephemeral, and are not completely convincing.
The same can be said of the possible 32m linear ditch feature, situated 7m to the southwest, and of a fragmentary oval enclosure bank, centred on TG 1974 1860. This bank measures 15m by at least 12m and is sub-circular or oval in plan, although the south-eastern side is not visible. The bank itself measures up to 1.2m in diameter.
There are a number of geological features visible in this area, and it is difficult to be certain whether the features described above are archaeological in nature, but they have been recorded due to the fact that they are located within the dispersed barrow cemetery (NHER 52449). A round barrow that was recorded 30m to the northeast (NHER 7776), but could not be identified from the available aerial photographs may in fact be represented by these cropmarks.
E. Bales (NMP), October 2009.
