Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Two areas of World War Two practice trenches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), to the east and west of Holt Road, Horsford. There are a great number of these small, hand-dug trenches, scattered over the two areas, centred on TG 1871 1787 and TG 1821 1740, and they have been mapped as two extents of area. They may be related to a group of larger possible practice trenches to the north-west (NHER 52425), and may also have been sited here due to the proximity of the rifle range, at TG 1938 1802, which was clearly in use during World War Two (S3).
E. Bales (NMP), November 2009.

Archaeological Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey. Houghen Plantation.
Site 1a:
Two depressions at TG 1799 1756 are possibly part of the practice trench system. One is approximately 5m square and 0.3m deep on a trackway and the other is 1m in diameter with steeps sides and 0.5m deep.
Site 3:
A well defined bank from TG 1778 1795 to TG 1816 1755 up to 1m high with ditches of varying survival on both side of it length could also be associated with the military activity within this area.
See report (S4) for further details.
