Summary

A system of field boundary ditches and trackways, partly depicted on the Tithe Map of 1841, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs on land to the east of Lodge Farm, Horsford. The majority of features are likely to be medieval to post medieval in date, although it is possible that more than one phase of activity is visible on this site.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A system of field boundary ditches and trackways are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S6), on land to the east of Lodge Farm, Horsford, centred on TG 1982 1601.
The majority of features on an east northeast-west southwest alignment appear to correspond with field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map of 1841 (S7), or drainage features shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey Map (S8).

A possible trackway runs south-north from to TG 1978 1617, before turning a corner and continuing to the southeast as far as TG 1990 1602. This section corresponds with a boundary depicted on the Tithe Map, as does the southern end of a similar feature, probably part of the same trackway, 516m to the north, recorded as NHER 53205. A third section of the same possible trackway is visible to the southeast from TG 1998 1601 to TG 2014 1595, and whilst it is not depicted on the historic maps, is likely to also date to the medieval to post medieval period.

Then only features that do not appear to correspond with those depicted on historic maps are a broad linear feature running from TG 1964 1611 to TG 1987 1600, which does share an alignment with the features described above and therefore may be contemporary with them, and two possible trackways to the south, centred on TG 1975 1593. The possible trackways to the south were only visible on one photographic frame (S5), and not as a stereo pair, and have therefore been recorded with a note of caution.
