Summary

Cropmarks of a medieval to post medieval rectilinear enclosure are visible on aerial photographs. It is oriented in a similar way to the modern field boundaries, suggesting that it is medieval to post medieval in origin, although it does not appear to be marked on Faden or Bryant’s historic maps of the area. One of the internal divisions, however, is in exactly the same place as a field boundary marked on the Tithe Map of 1841. It is possible that the group of enclosures relate to a medieval to post medieval croft or yards connected to the site of the adjacent Manor Farm.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A medieval to post medieval rectilinear enclosure is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3) on land to the south of Old Manor Farm, Horsford. The site is centred on TG 1808 1565. It is possible that the group of enclosures relate to a medieval to post medieval croft or yards connected to the site of the adjacent Manor Farm.
It consists of a large rectangular enclosure, measuring externally approximately 56m by 60m, which includes two internal east-west divisions.
It is oriented in a similar way to the modern field boundaries, suggesting that it is medieval to post medieval in origin, although it does not appear to be marked on Faden or Bryant’s historic maps of the area. One of the internal divisions, however, from TG 1805 1564 to TG1811 1563, is in exactly the same place as a field boundary marked on the Tithe Map of 1841 (S4).
There are also two smaller (up to 8m by 7m) possible enclosures attached to this feature, one to the northwest at TG 1807 1568 and one to the south at TG 1810 1559. It is possible that these features may relate to crofts or house platforms and that the strips behind may be tofts or field divisions.
E. Bales (NMP), November 2009.

April-August 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field H5).
The northernmost trench excavated at this location revealed three intercutting ditches that almost certainly corresponded with the western side of this enclosure. Finds recovered included four sherds of Roman pottery and a small amount of burnt flint.
A feature that appeared to correspond with the short north-west to south-east aligned cropmark at TG 1806 1565 also produced Roman pottery, along with a small number of Early Bronze Age sherds.
See report (S5) and NHER 61127 for further details.

January-September 2016. Strip Map and Sample Excavation.
Excavation of site on route of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Area 3).
Details awaited.
