Summary

Cropmarks of an undated square enclosure along with several linear features can be seen on aerial photographs on land to the east of Rosefield, Horsford. They appear to be earlier than the possible medieval to post medieval croft, NHER 53232, to the north, as the cropmarks are fainter, although it is possible that they relate to geological, rather than archaeological features.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of an undated square enclosure along with several linear features can be seen on aerial photographs on land to the east of Rosefield, Horsford, centred on TG 1843 1500. They appear to be earlier than the possible medieval to post medieval croft, NHER 53232, to the north, as the cropmarks are fainter and on a different alignment, although it is possible that they relate to geological, rather than archaeological features.
The square enclosure measures 24m by 21m externally. The ditches defining it are up to 2m wide. There are several possible breaks in the ditch, but the most convincing as a possible entrance is in the northern side, at TG 1843 1500.
The enclosure does not appear to be aligned in the same way as the possible medieval to post medieval enclosure to the north, NHER 53232.
A significant quantity of prehistoric worked flint was recovered from the north-western part of the field to the east during fieldwalking (NHER 51048), and this may suggest a prehistoric date for this feature.
There are several geological marks resulting from frost cracking in this area, but the possible enclosure described above is the most convincing of these, and has been mapped by merit of its convincing corners and possible linear cropmarks coming away from it, on slightly different alignment to NHER 53232. It also appears to have more in common with the possible late prehistoric enclosure approximately 640m to the northwest (NHER 18131).
