Summary

Fragmentary linear and curvilinear ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs on land to the east and west of Drayton Lane, Horsford. It is possible that these linear ditches make up part of an Iron Age to Roman field system, related to the possible road and enclosures visible 250m to the north (NHER 53239), although it is also possible that these features may be medieval to post medieval in date.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
Fragmentary linear and curvilinear ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4) on land to the east and west of Drayton Lane, Horsford, centred on TG 1931 1512. It is possible that these linear ditches make up part of an Iron Age to Roman field system, related to the possible road and enclosures visible 250m to the north (NHER 53239), although it is also possible that these features may be medieval to post medieval in date. Several of the features appear to be aligned southwest-northeast, and whilst this is similar in alignment to the postulated Roman features to the north, they are also parallel to the field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map of 1841 (S5), and may therefore be medieval to post medieval in date.
E. Bales (NMP), November 2009.

April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of proposed footprint of Norwich Northern Distributor Road and associated works (Blocks 52).
Although this survey area coincided with at least two of the cropmarks mapped to the east of Drayton Lane there was no evidence for corresponding sub-surface remains.
See report (S6) and 61133 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 August 2015. Amended 14 May 2019.

May 2014-January 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of proposed footprint of Norwich Northern Distributor Road and associated works (Area H9a).
This survey area coincided with the two north-north-east to south-south-west aligned cropmarks mapped to the west of Drayton Lane. As during the earlier survey there was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
See report (S7) and 61132 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 May 2019.
