Summary

A geophysical survey undertaken in 2009 identified several weak anomalies that may represent soil-filled ditches. A geophysical survey of an adjacent block in 2014/2015 identified evidence for former infrastructure associated with the adjacent airfield runway but little else of potential archaeological signficance.

2004-2005. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of western route options for Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 12 July 2019.

March-June 2009. Geophysical Survey
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site HF4). Area examined in order to achieve representative sample of overall route. This area had been planted with potatoes at the time of the survey and the associated ridges had a detrimental effect on the quality of the date recovered.
A series of strong dipolar magnetic anomalies in this area may well be associated with an overgrown farm track that bisected the survey area. A north-to-south aligned linear dipolar anomaly may indicate the position of a former field boundary or a buried service pipe/drain. An area of strong dipolar anomalies was present to the east, the nature of which remains uncertain.
A number of weak linear positive anomalies detecting in the western part of the survey area may represent archaeologically significant soil-filled features, although it was noted that two demarcated a modern machine track.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 August 2015.

May 2014-January 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on updated proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Areas HF4).
This survey identified no anomalies of obvious archaeological significance.
A fragmentary, curvilinear anomaly at the eastern end of this field was parallel to an extant runway and therefore potentially caused by the remains of former airfield intrastructure.
A dipolar linear anomaly locates a buried service pipe or cable.
All other anomalies were likely to be the result of changes in the underlying geology, recent agricultural practices or the presence of ferrous debris in the topsoil.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2019.
