Full Description
2002-3. Rock art discovery modern replica.
In 2002 a member of the public discovered rock carvings on a boulder on the beach at Gorlstone on Sea. These were initially thought to be Bronze Age in date but further investigation in 2003 revealed them to be modern. It was also revealed that a local man had carved them between 7 and 8 years previously following a visit to Scotland where he observed runic stones and decided to carve similar patterns over a 3 day period onto the boulder. The design of the rock art is similar to the 'labyrinth' designs seen on rocks at Tormain Hill in Midlothian and County Wicklow.
See secondary file for newspaper cutting (S1) and extract from a paper on 'Labyrinth' rock carvings.
