Full Description
January 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Possible medieval to post medieval ditches are visible as earthworks, cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs of the area surrounding Gonville Hall, Wymondham (NHER 8924) (S1)-(S10).
Earthworks of the moat, as depicted on the 1st edition tithe map (S11) are visible on the majority of the aerial photographs, along with a number of features that are not depicted on the historic maps.
A soilmark of a ploughed out ditch and bank is apparent to the north east of the hall (S1) and (S3), running for 90m southwest-northeast from TG 1002 0031 to TG 1008 0038, whereupon it appears to meet a track, which may suggest that the soilmark is of recent agricultural origin.
Several cropmarks are visible to the south and east of the hall itself, and an area of possible Toft sites is visible as cropmarks (S4) (S9) (S10), with a possible house platform centred on TG 1004 0012. This measures 24m x 19m internally, 34m x 25m externally.
Several ditches are also visible to the south of the area, some of which coincide with field boundaries visible on the historic maps, and others may relate to drainage channels, as there appears to be a paleochannel running diagonally northeast-southwest across the field to the south of the hall.
E. Bales (NMP), January 2010.
