Map

January 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible medieval to post medieval enclosure, as well as several linear features and possible pits are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), on land to the northwest of Clapgate Farm, Wymondham.
The possible enclosure, centred on TG 0882 0027, is sub-square in plan, and measures 77m by approximately 89m externally. The ditch defining it measures up to 6m in width, and it encloses an area of approximately 68m x 76m. There is a possible entrance at TG 0879 0029, which measures 17m in width, and the eastern side of the ‘enclosure’ is made up by a narrow ditch which is depicted on the Tithe Map of 1839 (S4). A medieval to post medieval date for this feature therefore seems most likely.
A possible double-ditched trackway is also visible to the northwest of the enclosure, running roughly north south from TG 0889 0044 to TG 0891 0031. It seems to join two field boundaries visible on the Tithe Map, and is also likely to be medieval to post medieval in date.
In the field to the north, another possible linear ditch, albeit rather faint, is visible, along with three possible pit features, centred on TG 0886 0038 measuring up to 10m by 28m. It must be noted, however, that all these features were rather faint and ephemeral and only visible on one set of photographs (S3), and the possible pits may be geological rather than archaeological in nature.
E. Bales (NMP), January 2010.
